As one of the most cost-effective and long-standing weed control agents, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (commonly referred to as 2,4-D) is a systemic herbicide widely used around the world. It provides selective control of various terrestrial and aquatic broadleaf weeds without significantly affecting most grasses, including cereals, lawn turf, and grasslands. Today, 2,4-D is widely used to manage unwanted vegetation in a range of applications. In forestry, it is used for stump treatment and trunk injection, and for selective brush control in conifer forests. It is also used to control weeds and brush along roadways, railways, and power lines where they may damage equipment or interfere with safe operation. In addition, it is applied for the control of aquatic weeds to support safe boating, fishing, and swimming, or to protect hydroelectric equipment. It is further used by government for controlling the spread of invasive, noxious, and non-native weed species, as well as for managing various poisonous weeds, such as poison ivy and poison oak. In addition to forestry applications, 2,4-D may be used as a supplement in plant cell culture media in laboratories as a dedifferentiation hormone.
